Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola was full of praise for striker Gabriel Jesus after his goal and performance in City’s 2-1 win at the Bernabeu on Wednesday.

Jesus played an unorthodox wide role for much of the game, but popped up in the penalty area to score a precious second half equaliser.

Guardiola was fulsome in his praise of the Brazilian and felt his decision to select Jesus ahead of Sergio Aguero was justified.

“There aren’t many players in the world like him,” Guardiola beamed. “When he plays down the wings he is very difficult to stop.

“I wanted to play him to open up the pitch, because with Varane, Valverde, Ramos and Casemiro they are very strong in the middle of the field.”

The player himself was very happy with the result and the performance in his first game at the Bernabeu.

“I’m very happy with the game that we played, because we knew this would be a very difficult match.

“It was my first game at the Bernabeu, but I knew it would be very difficult to play here. Everybody knows that you have to suffer when you play here.

“But we were very strong and we stayed calm, especially when we conceded the first goal. If anyone can turn this result around though, it is Real Madrid.”
