Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson explained that his lengthy dash to celebrate Liverpool’s second goal against Manchester United on Sunday was a homage to Pepe Reina.
The Brazilian notched a stoppage time assist after his kick up field set Mo Salah through on goal for the Reds to seal the points.
Alisson celebrated by running the length of the field towards the Kop to greet Salah and share the moment.
The Brazilian revealed he was knowingly copying a Pepe Reina celebration after the Spanish goalie provided a similar assist in a Liverpool v United game from 2009.
“I went to celebrate it like this because I saw Pepe Reina do that against United,” Alisson said.
Right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold also noticed the nod to history. “It was the fashion we did it in, Ali getting the assist which is unbelievable,” he said.
“There’s comparisons with one we scored about 10 years ago and then he’s ran up and celebrated like Pepe Reina did! It was a good way to end the game.”
