Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says that he and the club will discuss whether Gabriel Martinelli will go away with the Brazil Olympic squad in January.

The Seleção U-23s will play a CONMEBOL pre-Olympic tournament in Colombia from January 18th until February 9th.

Martinelli has been called into the squad, which would mean him missing four Premier League games and an FA Cup tie.

Arsenal are not obliged to release the player however as the tournament is not within a sanctioned FIFA window.

Arteta says Arsenal will talk to the player and consider whether or not he travels. “In the middle of the season it’s never ideal for players to go to that type of tournament,” the Gunners boss said.

“We’ll discuss with the club whether there’s an obligation, whether that’s something that the player really wants to go to and we’ll make a decision on that.”
