Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has labelled Fernandinho an “all-time great” player for the club amid contract talks for the player.

The 34-year old’s deal expires in the summer, but after another impressive campaign, where he has played largely at centre-half, City are confident of another 1-year extension.

An injury crisis in defence has seen the Brazilian play in the heart of the defence with aplomb. Guardiola paid a glowing tribute to the player.

“He does not have to convince me to stay longer, he convinced me on day one three years ago,” Pep Guardiola said.

“He doesn’t need to do anything special. It’s just his age, his desire and how he is going to feel with many things.

“He is one of the greatest players that this club has had in its entire history.” Fernandinho joined the club from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2013.
