Who’s Most Likely to Win the Ballon d’Or in 2020?

Action Images

Both Argentine and Barcelona forward Lionel Messi and Portuguese and Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo dominated the last ten years of the Ballon d’Or until Luka Modric of Croatia won his first in 2018. But it seems the award could be heading back towards one of these two players once more, if they continue to perform well on the pitch. Here are four of the top contenders for 2020’s Ballon d’Or according to the team at Infogol.

Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi is leading the predictions for becoming the next Ballon d’Or winner. Last season was one of the best in his career in terms how he played and having won it several times before, there’s no denying that he’s in a great position to repeat history once again. Messi won the Forward of the Season award for 12 goals during the 2910 UEFA Champions League and he finished the 2918/19 season with 52 goals, 36 of which in La Liga which allowed him to win his sixth Golden Boot, but he keeps breaking new records and has the opportunity to achieve the same again.

Neymar Jr

Neymar has long been a contender for the Ballon d’Or, but at Barcelona & PSG he has occasionally been overshadowed by his superstar team mates, however many pundits think this can be the year where Neymar pulls everything together, having performed excellently in both domestic & international bouts recently, it’s not unthinkable for Neymar to end the season with 20+ goals & 20+ assists, which would put him in the running for the award.

Cristiano Ronaldo

The runner up as most likely contender for the Ballon d’Or is the brilliantly talented Cristiano Ronaldo who has the second-highest odds for bookmakers and the closest odds to Messi. Ronaldo provided 28 goals during the 2018/19 season which placed him outside the top 10 best goalscorers and he’s scored six of this year’s Champions League goals. There’s no doubt in the minds of fans that he’s capable of winning it again and with the predictions for his team look promising this season, he can still make an impressive comeback and win the award once more.

Virgil Van Dijk

One of the greatest players in the sport and a true leader on the pitch, Virgil Van Dijk deservedly earns a spot on the list of potential winners of the Ballon d’Or in 2020. UEFA’s Player of the Year this year, Van Dijk needs to maintain his impressive standards if he is to fight off the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for the title. But the Dutch defender has plenty of ambition and is focused on continually improving and performing better. He was reported as saying that there are still plenty of things that both he and the team can improve upon and if he is successful in achieving that then there’s a good chance he could be 2020’s winner.

Kylian Mbappe

Kylian Mbappe ended the 2918/19 season very successfully and has caught the attention of many for his incredibly playing and talents on the pitch. He was the runner-up for the Golden Shoe, scoring 33 goals in the French League, but he provided less impressive results in the Champions League which set him back compared to other players. However, his odds for this season look more promising and there’s a good chance that he can turn it around and become the best striker of the season, making him a strong contender.
