Brazil forward Roberto Firmino says Gabriel Jesus’ late missed penalty was the only downside of the Seleção’s 5-0 thrashing of Peru in São Paulo on Saturday.

Jesus missed a last minute penalty kick with the score at 5-0. Firmino scored earlier in the game to give his side a 2-0 lead.

The pair are competing for the centre-forward spot, but started together on Saturday, with Jesus starting on the right hand side of the attack.

“We know Gabriel, the great player that he is and the great guy he is. He had to take the penalty. Unfortunately he did not score the goal, but now he will look forward, be calm in the next game he will score.

“I was sad that he did not score because he played very well. He can be very proud of the way he played. I was rooting for him individually. It was not going to be decisive for the result, but I was happy for the great game he played.”
