Everton forward Richarlison has admitted that preventing Liverpool from going top of the Premier League served as extra motivation for Sunday’s Merseyside derby.

The teams shared a point at Goodison Park in a hard fought 0-0 and the Brazilian, who came off the bench in the second half, says stopping Liverpool was an incentive.

A win would have seen the Reds regain top spot, but the draw means they are second, 1 point behind leaders Manchester City.

“A derby is a derby. We always go in with blood on our eyes. We try to do our best, unfortunately we don’t leave with the victory,” he told ESPN Brasil.

“But we managed to take two points from Liverpool, who are fighting for the title. Whether we want it or not, they are our great rivals, and we could get in the way.

“Because it’s important for us here too, if they win the match, they would go back to the first place, and we did not want that.”
