Chelsea defender David Luiz was full of regret that his team could not overcome Manchester City in Sunday’s Carabao Cup Final, after losing on penalties.

The scores were deadlocked at 0-0 after 120 minutes, but penalty misses from Luiz and Chelsea teammate Jorginho secured the trophy for City.

Luiz’s penalty hit the post and he said his main regret was not being able to deliver the trophy for Maurizio Sarri.

“He is a fantastic person so, of course, the players are with him. It was more difficult to miss the penalty that didn’t get him the trophy than it was for me. I wish I’d given that to Sarri.”

Luiz also denied that the extraordinary scenes at the end of extra time, where goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga appeared to be refused to be substituted after going down with cramp.

“The coach has power of our group, he has respect,” insisted Luiz. “For me there is not a problem here for that.

“We all believe in his philosophy, we believe in the way he wants us to play. That’s why we played a great game against the best team in Europe at the moment.”
