Marta Scoops Up FIFA ‘Best’ Award for Record Sixth Time
Brazilian superstar Marta won FIFA’s ‘The Best’ award for a record sixth time this week, as she fended off competition from Ada Hegerberg and Dzsenifer Marozsán.
Marta, now playing for Orlando Pride, previously won the award in its previous incarnation in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.
The Brazilian picked up the award at a ceremony in London and told the audience, “This means so much but it is not only about me. It is about my team-mates and women’s football.
“Most importantly, it is good to see women’s soccer grow each year. If I keep doing well and that can help off the field too, then I am happy.”
Meanwhile, her compatriots Dani Alves and Marcelo were voted into the FIFA XI of the year, with Real Madrid’s Luka Modric winning the men’s award for best player.
