‘Lukaku Tried To Convince Me To Play for Belgium’ Reveals Andreas Pereira
Brazil midfielder Andreas Pereira says that Manchester United teammate Romelu Lukaku tried to persuade him to declare his international allegiance to Belgium. Pereira was born in Belgium to a Brazilian father.
Pereira is in the Brazil squad for friendlies against USA and El Salvador this month. “He tried to convince me, yes,” Pereira told UOL Esporte, “We spoke, ‘you have to play for Belgium’, we’d talk about it all the time.
“I would say ‘it is difficult Romelu, playing for Belgium is another thing, to play for Brazil…it’s Brazil, it feels like my home. But he respects my decision, he told me, ‘if this is how you feel, you should follow your heart.’
Brazil were eliminated from this summer’s World Cup by Belgium and Pereira admitted that was doubly difficult for him to watch, “It was tough, it was difficult to see Brazil lose. I watched with my friend who is Belgian!”
