Alisson ‘Gives Us Confidence’ Says Joe Gomez
Liverpool centre-half Joe Gomez rallied behind his goalkeeper Alisson after the Brazilian made a high profile error in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Leicester City.
Alisson was caught dwelling on the ball in his own penalty area, allowing Demari Gray to tee up James Maddison to reduce the arrears.
Liverpool defender Gomez insisted Alisson’s penchant for taking risks in possession gives the defence confidence, as opposed to making them nervous.
“All the time he gives us that confidence that we can play and it relieves a lot of pressure for us. Everyone has their style of play and we don’t want him to change.”
Jurgen Klopp added that Liverpool can take advantage if opponents see the error as an opportunity to press the Reds’ keeper.
“If they go for the goalkeeper then someone else has the space, so [we should] use it.” Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp explained the continued absence of Fabinho from the squad.
The Brazilian signed from Monaco for £45m during the summer, but has not even made the substitutes bench for the last three matches.
“The team is good, he needs time to adapt. He could have been in the squad but it’s quite difficult when they are all fit. He will come back. He’s already made big steps in the last few weeks.”
