Brazil’s fitness coach Fábio Mahseredjian has defended the team’s physical preparation, after facing questions with Marcelo the latest Seleção player to suffer an injury.

The Real Madrid left-back had to be replaced by Filipe Luis after just 8 minutes of Brazil’s 2- 0 win over Serbia on Wednesday complaining of a back spasm. Danilo, Douglas Costa, Renato Augusto and Fred have all been injured in training since reporting for duty.

“Injuries happen, the causes may be several, but it is under control. We have decreased the pace of the sessions and we are adjusting more and more, with two days of recovery between one game and another.

“These are accidents that occur every day. It was not overtraining, we’re adjusting the load, continuing to adjust. If we have to rest, we’ll give the players some time.” Meanwhile, goalscorer Paulinho insisted he does not need to score to play well.

Paulinho opened the scoring against Serbia, after which he told reporters, “With the first two games, it depends a lot on how you see me. Maybe I am doing well when I score, maybe it’s your observation. My concern is to help the team, regardless of whether or not I score.”
