Manchester United Confirm Signing of Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk
Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Brazilian midfielder Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk. The player is currently part of Brazil’s World Cup squad, he completed his move shortly after the Seleção’s friendly with Croatia at Anfield on Sunday.
The player conducted a medical and agreed the transfer in principle, before re-joining his international teammates. The transfer fee is thought to be in the region of €55m, rising to €60m in add-ons.
Manchester City were also interested in the player and came close to signing him in January, before turning their attentions to Napoli midfielder Jorginho. Fred’s transfer is still subject to some administrative procedures.
Fred has spent 5 years with the Ukrainian champions, having joined them from Internacional in 2013. He has 8 caps for his country. He is seen as a long term replacement for Michael Carrick, who retired this summer.
