Brazil’s selection co-ordinator and former Arsenal midfielder Edu Gaspar says that Brazil are among the favourites for this summer’s World Cup and that the staff and players are not afraid of it.

The squad met up on Monday, with the exception of Marcelo, Casemiro and Roberto Firmino, who will play in Saturday’s Champions League final, to begin preparations for this summer’s tournament.

"We must not be afraid to say that Brazil is among the favourites, and not take that as a burden, it's a matter of being realistic. If we look at all the facts, Brazil is a great national team," Edu said.

Brazil face warm up friendlies against Croatia at Anfield and then Austria in Vienna, before getting underway in Russia. Edu says the squad will treat these matches like World Cup fixtures.

"Today, we talked about playing those two games as if they were the World Cup. We studied those two teams tactically and saw they were ideal opponents. For now, they are more important than our first game [at the World Cup]."
