Brazil left-back Filipe Luis admitted he was relieved to be named in the Seleção World Cup squad this summer, after injury threatened his place.

Luis has fought off competition from Alex Sandro for a place in the final list. The Atleti player was in the provisional squad in 2014, but was one of the names cut.

Filipe says he is delighted to be included and now he is focused on winning the tournament. “Everybody dreams of playing in the World Cup. I want to win it.

“To win it, I have to be there. Today was the first stage. I always dreamed of winning it and we are on a good path. This year we are ready,” the player declared.

“The feeling is of great happiness, only God knows how much I have worked in recent months on this injury. I was overjoyed when I saw my name in the squad.

“I worked very, very hard to be available for the World Cup. It was important for me to think positively during my rehabilitation.

“I think I am the only player in history to break my leg before two World Cups!” he joked. “Of course I was worried about missing out when the injury hit.

“But I am quite religious. God gave me a purpose and I trust him. I know that through strength, faith and perseverance you can achieve anything.

“When I got to the dressing room after the injury, I thought, ‘it is ok, you will make it.’ I was already thinking about the first day of rehabilitation.”
