Manchester United are in pole position to sign Shakhtar Donetsk’s highly rated midfielder Fred, according to the Manchester Evening News.

The Brazilian has long been linked with local rivals Manchester City as they scout a long term heir to 33 year old Fernandinho.

However, with Michael Carrick set to retire this summer, United are also on the lookout for a deep lying playmaker and are also interested in the player.

City have apparently turned their attentions to Brazil born Italian international Jorginho of Napoli, leaving United a free path to Fred.

United boss Jose Mourinho confirmed that he would be in the market for two central midfielders this summer.

“We are going to invest the basic to improve our squad," Mourinho said. "We need to find a replacement for Michael Carrick, if Marouane Fellaini leaves, we need to find a replacement for Marouane Fellaini.

"There is always in the group of players, in the squad, there is always a player or a couple of players, they are not playing a lot, and they will try obviously to leave.”
