Coutinho Should Refuse Champions League Medal, Says Liverpool Legend
Former Liverpool centre-back and one time assistant manager Phil Thompson says that Philippe Coutinho should turn down a Champions League winners medal if Liverpool go on to win the competition.
The Reds are in the semi-finals, while Barcelona were eliminated against Roma this week. UEFA have confirmed that Coutinho would be entitled to a winners medal should Liverpool win the trophy, as he played for them in the group stage.
But Kop legend Phil Thompson thinks Coutinho should turn it down if that scenario were to arise, “He left Liverpool to go to Barcelona knowing he wasn’t going to play Champions League football,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
“I got a medal in 1977 for Liverpool because I played up until the semi-finals. I don’t count that as a winners medal. I have that in my house in a cabinet but I say wherever I go I’ve only two European Cup winners medals.
“I’d like to think if there’s anything about Coutinho, if they do go on to win it, he says ‘no, I don’t deserve that’. And he wouldn’t. I don’t care, it’s wrong.”
