Real Sociedad attacker Willian José admits that he was surprised to be called into the Brazil squad for March friendlies against Russia and Germany.

However, the Brazilian has launched an impassioned defence of his record, suggesting that the Brazilian press have not tracked his record since he moved to Spain.

Willian earned his first Seleção call-up having scored 18 goals for Real Sociedad this season. Prior to this, he had spells at Santos, São Paulo and Grêmio in Brazil.

He has enjoyed a breakout season at Sociedad and the player has suggested that the Brazilian press are surprised since they do not follow European football closely enough.

“I was surprised to be in the last squad before the World Cup, but it happened to me. People can say what they want, but many do not follow my games.

“In 31 games, I have 18 goals in the season, a very good average for a centre-forward who does not play for one of the big teams in Europe.

“People have to follow up more, they are looking only for what I did or did not do five years ago," explained the player.
