Lokomotiv Moscow Turned Down €10m Neymar Deal
Lokomotiv Moscow’s former president Nikolai Naumov claims that the Russian club couldhave bought Neymar from Santos for about €10m when he was a teenager- but the clubdidn’t think he would be worth the fee.
Then at Santos, Neymar represented Brazil at a youth tournament in Mexico and piqued theinterest of the Lokomotiv scouts. Naumov says that the club made enquiries with Santos, butdeemed the move too risky.
“We thought about whether or not it was worth buying Neymar. We wanted to buy him. Ourscouts watched the Brazilian. There were quite big doubts. First, he was too young. Second,it was unclear how he’d adapt to Russia… so we decided against getting him.
“It would have been around €10m, probably. You understand, paying so much for ayoungster from another continent – you have to be careful with this sort of thing.
“Yes, we [Russia] did lose [to Brazil] in the final, but I didn’t notice that Neymar played anybetter than the others. Alan Gatagov looked just as good.”
