‘Neymar Had To Step Out of Messi’s Shadow’ Says Dani Alves
Paris Saint Germain right-back Dani Alves says that Neymar’s move to PSG was necessary for him tostep out of the shadow of Lionel Messi at Barcelona. Alves and Neymar are long time friends, havingplayed together for Brazil, Barcelona and now the Ligue 1 club.
Alves joined from Juventus last summer and his presence in Paris is understood to have been amotivating factor for Neymar to decide to join PSG in a world record £198m transfer in August 2017.Alves thinks Neymar made the right choice.
“I think he’s up there with [Lionel] Messi as the most influential player in world football,” Alves toldFIFA.com. “The thing is, he had to come out of his shadow a little. Playing with someone as unique asLeo is the most incredible thing that can happen to you, but there’s always that doubt in your mind ifit’s you that really has the quality or if it’s him.
“I always loved playing with him, but he’s Argentinian and Ney and I are Brazilians. Sooner or laterwe had to come up against each other (laughs). I think you’ve got a better chance of achieving thingsindividually when you’re not so close to a player like him. It was important for Ney’s owndevelopment and for Brazil for him to follow his own path.”
