It’s a debate that has polarised football for the last decade: Who is better: Lionel Messi or
Cristiano Ronaldo. Both players have dominated the footballing landscape during this period.
But Brazil legend Pelé, himself often pitted against Diego Maradona in the “who is the
greatest player ever?” debate, says he would marginally prefer Lionel Messi in his team.
Speaking to Bem, Amigos! Pele, nicknamed O Rei (The King), said, “It's sad that you have
only two players in the world to choose from now.
“Cruyff, Maradona, Pele, Zico, Junior. But now all over the world now there are only two
players. And Neymar, right? Our Brazilian is getting there.
“I would still opt for Messi, because scoring is important, no doubt, but if you do not have
anyone to create, then the ball is not enough. For my team I prefer Messi.”
