Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has opened the door for defender David Luiz to leave the
club in the January transfer window if he chooses to do so. The Brazilian is close to a return
from injury, but has fallen behind Andreas Christiansen in the pecking order.
Conte says his preference is to keep the player, but he understands if he and Belgian striker
Michy Batshuayi want to leave. “I understand it’s very important to keep players very happy
to stay here to work with us and I think this must be our priority.
“To keep the players happy to stay with us, to continue to work with us. At the same time, I
was a player and I will understand if someone is thinking in this way (that they need to play
more.
“Our squad is not big and for this reason I think it’s impossible to send on loan one player or
to sell one player if we don’t take another player.”
Meanwhile, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has denied that he is interested in signing Luiz,
“No, those reports are not true at all,” he told a press conference on Tuesday.
