Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says that the absence of French full-back Bernard Mendy through injury means that he cannot play Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus together at the moment.

The pair formed a formidable partnership earlier in the season, but lately Guardiola has rotated between the experienced Argentine and the young Brazilian.

Guardiola says that without Mendy, who suffered a serious knee injury a few weeks ago, it is no longer viable to play the two together.

“The two are in top form and choosing only one to play in attack is one of my toughest decisions. We have a lot of games over a season and they will have the chance to do what they know, either coming off the bench or as a starter.

“Aguero and Gabriel played together while we had Mendy. With him in the field it was possible to do this, to be more attacking and more open. Now that he’s hurt it’s much more complicated to play this way.”
