Phillipe Coutinho has been ruled out of Brazil’s friendly with Japan in Lille on Friday, but could take part in Tuesday night’s fixture with England at Wembley, Brazil’s doctor Rodrigo Lasmar has confirmed.

The Liverpool man has missed the last three games for his club with a thigh problem, but the Seleção medical staff is optimistic that he can play a small part in the match in London.

Lasmar said, “Coutinho had a muscle injury in the left thigh adductor, he was in the final stages of recovery, we knew he would not be in full condition, but we chose to make a final recovery with him.

“Against England he can maybe play, but he may not be able to participate. If he can, he can stay on the bench and play for a few minutes. It is a small chance. We focus on getting him back for the second game.

“He worked today and Coutinho felt nothing, it was how we imagined it would be. On Tuesday, we will do more intense physical work. If all goes well, he will start working with the ball again on Wednesday.”
