Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho says that the team have taken a huge step towards qualification for the knockout rounds of the Champions League with their 2-0 home win over his former club Shakhtar Donetsk.

City overcame the Ukrainian side 2-0 at the Etihad Arena, to follow on from their 4-0 away win at Feyenoord on matchday one. With 6 points from their first 2 games and with Napoli and Shakhtar having both dropped points, they look good for qualification from the group.

“It was an important step for us … I think we did a huge step for our qualification to the next stage,” the Brazilian told Manchester City’s official website.

“We are in the process to try and go forward and this is good because if we want to be at the top of the group we have to win as many games as possible.”

Fernandinho also referenced the competition for places in attack, with City in a rich vein of goalscoring form, “All of our attacking players have a competition between them to see who scores more goals and that’s good for us because we try to play at the same level every game.”
