Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard says that he tried to stay away from Philippe Coutinho in training during his playing days- for fear that the Brazilian would embarrass him with the ball.

Gerrard played with Coutinho for two seasons before joining LA Galaxy in 2015. Gerrard now coaches the Liverpool U-18 team and he told BT Sport that Coutinho was a nightmare to train against.

Speaking during BT Sport’s coverage of Liverpool’s win over Leicester City on Saturday night, Gerrard joked, “It was impossible to mark him in training.

“I hated when I had him as an opponent in training. I avoided approaching him and told him many times to stay away from me, so as not to embarrass me!

“He has a very low center of gravity and is very fast, he is always two or three steps ahead of the defenders.” Coutinho scored with a curling free-kick to help the Reds to a 3-2 win at the King Power Stadium.
