Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has urged his young striker Gabriel Jesus to strive to keep improving. The Brazilian has scored 11 goals in 15 appearances since joining from Palmeiras in January.

Jesus will reportedly be handed a payrise for his efforts, but City boss Guardiola insists there is more to come from the player and has urged him to keep striving for improvement. “Even with the top striker that he is – he’s the No9 for Brazil – and I promise you that is not easy.

“I think he has a lot of gap to improve. There are a lot of things he can be better at in the future because he is young enough. I am excited to try to help him to do that. Especially the simple things that he can improve to become a better player.”

Guardiola says the player was badly missed when he broke his foot in February, missing 10 weeks, “Gabriel helped us a lot when he arrived, we missed him a lot,” said Guardiola. “We must not forget last season.

“He arrived in January and his impact was ‘wow’ outstanding. But after three or four games he was injured for three months. We missed him because of our lack of goals last season. Maybe with him it would have been a little bit different.”
