Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde described his ‘joy’ as summer signing Paulinho came off of the substitute’s bench to hit the winner for Barcelona against Getafe this weekend.

The Brazilian signed for the La Liga club from Guangzhou Evergrande this summer and the €40m price tag raised a fair few eyebrows in the Spanish press.

Paulinho was introduced as a second half substitute for Barcelona and scored the winner when he latched onto Lionel Messi’s through ball. Barca boss Valverde hopes the goal gives him some confidence.

“Paulinho’s goal against Getafe? It was a joy for him and it was a joy for everybody. These things really give him confidence.”

The player himself was delighted with the effort too, which helped maintain Barca’s 100% start to the season, “It’s difficult to score in these situations, but I received a great pass from Messi and I’m very happy for my goal.

“Leo passed me a great ball & I thank God that it went in and that I scored the winner. I usually score goals of this type. Those are my qualities. I never give up on any ball.”

Teammate Denis Suarez was also quick to praise the Brazilian, “Paulinho was even captain of Brazil National Team in last international break, so this should tell you everything you need to know about him.”
