It is understood that Spanish side Atletico Madrid have made a breakthrough in their quest to sign former striker Diego Costa from Chelsea. The player has been on strike at the London club since being told he was no longer wanted by Antonio Conte in May.

Costa returned to the northeast of Brazil, where he was raised and refuses to play or train with Chelsea until he gets his wish to move back to Madrid. The deal has proved complicated as Atleti are under a transfer embargo until January.

With the transfer window closed, Costa cannot be transferred until January, but the player has not been registered in Chelsea’s Champions League squad, which suggests they have no plans to use him.

Atleti are understood to have finally met Chelsea’s £60m asking price, albeit via a phased deal with payments in instalments. This being the case, Atleti would be clear to sign the player they sold to Chelsea in the summer of 2014.
