Liverpool’s Sadio Mane insists he wasn’t trying to hurt Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson, after Mane was sent off for catching the Brazilian in the face with a high challenge in a game between the two teams on Saturday lunchtime.

Mane was given his marching orders as he and Ederson raced to the ball just outside of City’s penalty area. Mane’s high boot caught Ederson in the face, leaving the Brazilian requiring lengthy treatment and several stitches in his face.

But Mane is adamant it was an accident and that he didn’t expect to get sent off, “Honestly, I was focusing more on the goalkeeper than the card and when I saw the red card I was surprised because I was expecting a yellow card,” he told Sky Sports.

“But I’ll accept it and try to forget it. I was going for the ball and I didn’t have the intention to hurt him because I’m not that kind of player. I wish him a quick recovery. It’s not easy for me because I love to play football and I enjoy helping my team to win games.”
