Turkish club Fenerbahce claim they were very close to signing Chelsea’s rebel striker Diego Costa on Friday. The Turkish transfer window closed on Friday evening and Fenerbahce tried to arrange a loan deal for the forward.

Costa is refusing to play for Chelsea after being told he was no longer wanted by Blues boss Antonio Conte in May. He has been trying to push through a transfer to his former club Atletico Madrid, but did not succeed.

Atleti are under a transfer ban until January, so Fenerbahce tried to take the Chelsea striker on loan until January, when Costa will likely succeed in his wish to join the La Liga side.

Manager Aykut Kocaman told Turkish CNN, “The transfer of Diego Costa was very close. But then the result was negative.”

Costa has been omitted from Chelsea’s squad for the group stages of the Champions League, which indicates that he is unlikely to play for the club before the January transfer window.
