Brazil left-back Filipe Luis does not want to repeat the heartbreak saw him omitted from the squad at the final hurdle. Maxwell was preferred to the Atleti man on that occasion and the 30 year old is working hard not to repeat that experience this time.

Luis is behind Marcelo in the pecking order currently, with Juventus’ Alex Sandro snapping at his heels to take the back up spot in Russia next summer. Luis, having been in this situation before, is taking nothing for granted.

“I cannot speak of injustice. In 2014, Maxwell had an excellent season, as did Marcelo. I did my best. From that moment, the call is in the hands of another person. The goal now is the same. The only thing that is in my hands is to play my best for my club and in the National Team.

“After that I have to wait. Whether I go or not, it does not depend on me. I have no regrets. I know I did my best. I was not called in 2014 because another player was in great shape. So much so that I gave Felipão (Scolari, Brazil manager in 2014) a hug. He is a great friend.”
