Corinthians goalkeeper Cassio is prepared to fight for a place in Brazil’s World Cup squad, after his recall to the national team for qualifiers against Ecuador and Colombia. His performances for table topping Timão have earned him his first call in 2 years.

It is the first time Tite, his coach at Corinthians from 2012 until 2016, has called him into the Seleção. Cassio has acknowledged that the competition is high for the three goalkeeper spots for the Russia World Cup, but hopes to get his first full cap soon.

“The fact that this happens is due to the quality of goalkeepers we have in Brazilian football today. There are many quality goalkeepers who are being summoned.

“Alisson, when he has played in the National Team, has played very well, responded very well and that is why he has been called up. I am returning to the national team, am very happy to be here, to represent my country and I hope to do my best every day to continue being called.

When asked about pressuring Alisson, the current number 1, Cassio responded, “I do not think that way, to unbalance Alisson. I have to do my job. I’ve been called now, I’m focused on helping.

“I’m here to contribute to the group, it’s a really cool group to work with. I arrived and was very well received by all. I’m here to add.”
