Chelsea manager Antonio Conte joked that striker Diego Costa was saving his goals for the business end of the season, after Costa broke his scoring duck with a brace in the Blues’ 4-2 win over Southampton at Stamford Bridge last night.

Costa had been on a 6 game scoring drought and lost his place in the starting line-up for Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham. Costa was restored to the starting XI on Tuesday and rewarded his manager’s faith with two goals.

“It’s important for forwards to score because the goal is your life,” the Chelsea manager said. “I always told him I was pleased with his commitment and work and he always worked for the team. I was always confident for him.

“I told you I am sure he is keeping his goals for the final part of the season,” Conte quipped. “Everyone feels a bit of pressure – the players, the club and also the fans who want to try and win after the past season.”

On the subject of Costa’s future, Conte was tight lipped, with rumours continuing to circulate about his future in London, “I continue to be focused on this moment and I’m reading a lot of speculation about all of us.

“It’s right to be focused. I’m sure they are focused on our target and it’s normal and part of this season to have someone to put problems in your team.”

“We must be stronger than this speculation
