Diego Costa says that ex-Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was the reason he joined The Blues in the summer of 2014. The striker left Atletico Madrid for London and won a league title with Chelsea in his first season.

Chelsea and Costa endured a nightmare second season, finishing 10th in the league when a number of players, including Costa, appeared to fall out with Jose Mourinho, who was subsequently sacked by Roma Abramovic.

But Costa says Mourinho was the main attraction for him when he decided to come to the Premier League, “In all honesty I always tell people I am grateful to Mourinho because he helped me a lot,” Costa told Sky Sports.

“As a player when you want to improve you always look for the best coach and Mourinho is one of the best. I wanted to come to Chelsea because of Mourinho. When I considered Chelsea I thought about the fact that Mourinho was here.

“He is a coach that demands a lot from his players, he wants the maximum.” Costa faces his old coach this afternoon, as Chelsea travel to Old Trafford, where Jose Mourinho is currently in the Manchester United hotseat.
