Watford goalkeeper Huerelho Gomes relishes wearing the captain’s armband for the Hornets. In the absence of Troy Deeney, Gomes wore the armband for last weekend’s victory over Sunderland and the 36-year old knows his experience is crucial for his teammates.

The ex-Tottenham stopper said, “The difference when I’m captain is I feel responsible for the team and the dressing room, without Troy, along with a few other players.

“When you don’t have a player like Troy on the pitch, of course we have to be more responsible. We have to say to the players to keep on top and to keep going.”

However, Gomes has emerged as a doubt for the game against his former club Tottenham on Saturday lunchtime with an injury picked up in the midweek victory over West Brom. Watford boss Walter Mazzarri said the Brazilian keeper will face a late fitness test.
