Liverpool have opened new contract talks with Brazilian star Philippe Coutinho, according to the Liverpool Echo. Coutinho’s current deal runs until 2020, but the Reds’ are reportedly keen to tie hom down for longer to ward off the advances of clubs like Barcelona.

Coutinho has been continually linked with the Catalan club and opening negotiations with 3 and a half years to go on his current deal suggests they are taking the links seriously. Liverpool are apparently not keen to agree on the sort of buyout clause that enabled Barcelona to swoop for Luis Suarez in 2014.

The Brazilian, who has scored 6 goals this season for the Reds, is likely to enjoy a salary rise should he choose to sign. He has scored 34 goals in 163 appearances to date and has become a key component in Jurgen Klopp’s free scoring attack.
