Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho has had his appeal against his red card against Burnley rejected and he will now serve a four match suspension, the Football Association has confirmed. The Brazilian was red carded during City’s 2-1 win over Burnley on Saturday for a high challenge on Gudmundsson.

It represented Fernandinho’s 3rd dismissal in just 6 appearances. In the 32nd minute of the match, he committed a lunging tackle on an opponent and was immediately sent off by the referee. Manchester City appealed the ban, but the FA have upheld the punishment.

As it is his second red card of the Premier League season, he will serve a four match suspension, as opposed to the statutory three matches for a red card of this nature. He will miss the FA Cup 3rd round tie at West Ham, followed by league fixtures against Everton, Spurs and West Ham again.

"Fernandinho will serve a four-match suspension with immediate effect after his claim of wrongful dismissal was rejected today [Wednesday 4 January 2017] following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing," an FA statement read.

“The Manchester City midfielder was sent off for serious foul play during the game against Burnley on Monday 2 January 2017. His suspension includes the standard sanction of an additional game as it was his second dismissal of the season."
