Michel Bastos leaves São Paulo after three and a half seasons; he made 120 appearances for the club and scored 22 goals.
After weeks of negotiations, Michel Bastos reached an agreement with São Paulo on Tuesday for the termination of his contract, which was valid until December 2017. According to Brazilian journalist Jorge Nicola, league champions Palmeiras have offered monthly wages of R$ 280,000 and R$ 1 million as bonus to sign the midfielder. São Paulo have been trying to include Michel Bastos in a player-exchange deal for over a month. Marco Aurélio Cunha, who is leaving the post of São Paulo’s executive director, said: “We understood that the best option for all parties would be to break the contract. São Paulo saves and Michel has the possibility to choose where to play.”
The desire of Palmeiras to count on Michel Bastos has to do with Alexandre Mattos. Palmeiras’ club director has been behind the former Lyon man since his time at Cruzeiro – in 2013, Michel preferred São Paulo to the Minas Gerais side. A Palmeiras leader was quoted: “I’m sure that in Brazil he will prefer to play for Palmeiras. The risk is that Michel Bastos may accept a millionaire proposal that he has from the Arab world.”
