Atalanta monitors João Schmidt, who's yet to renew with São Paulo
According to the information from Brazilian journalist Jorge Nicola, 23-year-old midfielder João Schmidt is upset at São Paulo, and can complete a free transfer next summer.
The player, who came through the youth system of São Paulo has rejected the offer made by president Leco to renew his contract, which ends in less than seven months. As reported by the journalist, João Schmidt has five proposals on hand from clubs in Europe. Italian side Atalanta monitors the situation of the midfielder, who finished the 2016 season as a starter and has been praised by newly appointed coach Rogério Ceni. João Schmidt will be able to sign a pre-contract with any team starting on December 30, and this would allow him to leave as a free agent in the middle of next year. According to Globo Esporte, the board of São Paulo and João Schmidt's representative Luizão have already met to discuss the situation of the player. Schmidt currently receives R$ 60,000 a month, and the Morumbi club have offered a renewal, which hasn't been accepted by him. São Paulo have already made it clear that they will not increase their proposal.
São Paulo executive director Marco Aurélio Cunha said: "We've reached our limit. I have a great relationship with Luizão, who was my player in Guarani and then we worked together in São Paulo. I have nothing to complain about him. We are offering not only an appreciation, but also a plan for the player to grow in performance and leave, as happened with Hernanes, who established his place here and then was victorious in Europe."
The situation of João Schmidt worries Rogério Ceni, who already made it clear that he wants to have the midfielder in his squad. Schmidt is valued in the squad, with more moral than Húdson and Wesley, for example. If São Paulo fail to sign another player for the position, it is certain that Schmidt will begin the season as a starter. The leaders expect him to change his mind and accept the proposal that has already been made. João Schmidt has already had a good experience in European football. In the 2014/2015 season, Schmidt had a spell at Portuguese side Vitória de Setúbal, where he was a regular starter. For São Paulo, the midfielder has already played 51 matches, and scoring two goals.
