The coach responsible for discovering Gabriel Jesús says that the player could reach the level of Messi or Neymar under Guardiola’s tutelage. 66 year old Jaime Melo was responsible for discovering him in a small school in the Anhanguera training camp, where he was a director.

Melo preaches patience with Jesús, still only 19, but thinks he could eventually become one of the world’s greatest strikers, "In the hands of Guardiola, he could arrive at the level of Neymar or Messi. But not in his first year.

"I would like to see his debut in Manchester City, getting psychologically and financially prepared," he wrote on UOL Esporte. Melo describes the process of uncovering Jesús and tipping off Palmeiras of his talent.

"In just four minutes, I could see he was different. I got up, got in the car, got the contract from Palmeiras, the next day he brought it back signed by his mother, Mrs. Vera, and I took him to the [Then director of the academy] Jair Jussio. I have not received anything until now. I took him to the team of my heart. I knew he was going places."
