According to Globo Esporte, Santos have officialized their interest in signing Atlético Mineiro striker Robinho.
Santos met Robinho in São Paulo on Thursday afternoon. During the meeting, Santos offered to pay off an old debt with the player, in the region of R$ 2 million, and officially expressed their interest in bringing him back to the Vila Belmiro in 2017. The initial conversation represented a small breakthrough, but the player understands that it’s not easy to convince Atlético Mineiro to release him. However, the former Manchester City forward has shown a willingness to return to Santos. The report states that negotiations between the parties will continue. Robinho has a contract until the end of 2017 with Atlético Mineiro, who have qualified for next season’s Copa Libertadores. Dryworld, a Canadian company that supplies sports equipment for Atlético Mineiro, and which was one of their partners in signing Robinho, had agreed to pay most of the wages of the attacker but they’ve ended their contract with the club.
After the meeting, Robinho, currently on vacation, went to Santos, but did not participate in the friendly of ex-midfielder Narciso in Vila Belmiro, although his presence was confirmed previously. Robinho wanted to avoid boos from the fans who would’ve felt betrayed by his transfer to Atlético, in addition to having a scheduled trip to China on Friday morning.
Robinho, however, claims to have spent Thursday at home and performing physical training, contrary to what was reported in the Brazilian press. In the published text, Robinho says he spent all day at home, with his family, and performing physical training to keep fit during the holidays.
