Santos hope to announce the signing of Brazilian defender Cleber on Tuesday.
The negotiation with Cleber, formerly of Corinthians and currently at German side Hamburg, has been underway since last week. The German team have accepted the proposal of €2 million in two installments, for 60% of the economic rights of the 26-year-old defender. The contract with Santos will be valid for four years, and the player has already reached an agreement on wages. Cleber is expected to travel to Brazil on Tuesday to undergo medical tests and sign the contract. The signing of Cleber was a request from coach Dorival Júnior, who cannot count on Luiz Felipe and Gustavo Henrique at the start of next season; both players underwent knee surgery and faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
According to ESPN Brasil, what weighed in favor of Santos was the desire of Cleber, who dreamt of returning to his home nation and was encouraged by the possibility of playing the Copa Libertadores next season. Cleber began his career at Paulista de Jundiaí, and has passed through Itumbiara and Catanduvense. However, it was at Ponte Preta that the defender stood out, which resulted in a sale to Corinthians in July 2013. An year later, he was bought by Hamburg for a fee of €3 million. Once confirmed, Cleber will be Santos’s third signing for next season. So far, the club have already reached a deal to bring right-back Matheus Ribeiro from Atlético-GO and Colombian striker Vladimir Hernández from Junior Barranquilla.
