Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola insists he will take his time with Gabriel Jesús’ development at the club and won’t place any goalscoring targets on him. The 19 year old is on vacation and will join his new teammates in January, having just completed a Brasileirão season with Palmeiras.

Guardiola says it is more important for the Brazilian to get to know the club and the team’s style in his first few months at City, "When he arrives here with us, first we have to help him to settle in England – to find a house with his family, to get him involved in the team and get to know him (and him us) as much as possible – and then play.

"I never believe in putting responsibility on the shoulders of strikers to score goals. I try to involve them in the way we have to play – that is my target, especially in the first year – and we will see what our level is.

"Always, we focus on the way we play. Results are just results. I am confident when I see the team play better and better every day and play like I want. I want to feel and enjoy seeing my team play," he continued.

"After the results, we can make the sentence. I want to feel something. I don’t feel anything for numbers – yes, results give confidence for the future – but I want to see [performances]. It is difficult here with many circumstances but I will try again and again to make the team better."
