20-year-old Brazilian striker Gabigol is not being used by Inter Milan, and can be loaned out by the Italian side in the January transfer window.
Coach Dorival Júnior has advised young striker Gabriel ‘Gabigol" Barbosa to return to Santos in 2017. Since arriving at Inter Milan for a transfer fee of €29 million last summer, Gabigol has only played 16 minutes for the team, in a league match against Bologna. He interests the Brazilian club, and the board dreams of signing the player on loan. Dorival said: “The advise that I would give him is to come back to Santos, but I don"t know if it"s the right or wrong advice. It"s natural to have a certain amount of patience in Europe, it"s a different adaptation. There is a lot of respect for the age of the players, those who are of a certain age have a preference regardless of quality sometimes, especially in Italy. That may be the reason, maybe not. If it happens to the contrary, it"s his feeling that will be worth much more than any other situation."
The problem to sign Gabigol is the player"s salary – he receives almost R$ 1 million [around €280,000] per month in Italy. Hence, the Milan club would have to pay more than half of the wages for the striker to be loaned to Santos in 2017. Because of this, Inter Milan are considering the possibility of sending Gabigol to other, lesser-known clubs in Europe. Las Palmas, from Spain, and Empoli and Pescara, from Italy, were reported as possible destinations for the Brazilian. Gabigol is unhappy with his situation at the club, as explained by his agent Wagner Ribeiro. He was expected to receive more chances with the arrival of Stefano Pioli, but he"s yet to play a single minute of football under the new coach. Wagner Ribeiro said: “I said that [Gabigol is not happy] because he is not happy. He wants to play. The problem is that, to date, he has not been evaluated, and hasn"t played. In 16 minutes, no one evaluates. But loaning him out is bad. He"ll be starting for Inter soon, just give him a chance. Gabriel is not like many players, who settle with the good salary they have and that"s fine. He wants to play, and if he does not play, I know he will not be happy. He wants to be an idol, and wants to play in the Champions League. If he"s to leave, it would be for a team the same size as Inter Milan."
In a press conference last Thursday, coach Pioli spoke briefly about the lack of opportunities for Gabigol. He said: “We talk a lot about players who are not on the pitch, there is a coach who works and picks players who are ready, and if he has not been picked, he is obviously less ready than his teammates."
