After considering the possibility of signing Ricardo Oliveira in a possible exchange deal including Lucão and Michel Bastos, São Paulo approached Santos to know the situation of the 36-year-old forward.
According to Lance!, the latest enquiry was more direct and to fulfill one of the wishes of newly appointed coach Rogério Ceni to have a centre forward in 2017. Santos, however, are not interested in selling Ricardo Oliveira and leaves their rival pessimistic. The board of directors at São Paulo does not hide the priority for a goal-scorer, and Ceni sees Ricardo Oliveira, with whom he worked in 2006 and 2010 at Tricolor, as an ideal name considering his technical ability and leadership profile. Club president Carlos Augusto de Barros e Silva authorized the enquiry made to Santos, which happened last week and was confirmed by all parties involved.
Santos president Modesto Roma Júnior heard the rival club’s interest, but soon pondered the political consequences of the eventual negotiation. Modesto fears that, the pressure internally and from fans, if he releases one of Santos’ major players to a rival, will interfere in the club’s electoral process, which will elect its new president by the end of 2017. At the same time, the election is also used as an argument to refuse an immediate renewal with Ricardo Oliveira, who has a contract until the end of next year. The striker’s entourage promises not to interfere with the talks as the clubs have been talking directly. Ricardo liked the interest shown by Ceni, but also maintains a close relationship with Santos, so he neither wants to force his stay at Vila Belmiro nor a possible return to Morumbi.
Sao Paolo have Andrés Chávez, with eight goals in 23 games, and Gilberto, with a goal in nine games, as options for center-forward. U20 striker Pedro has also been used in the professional team. Meanwhile, Santos have Rodrigão and Joel in the group as reserves for Ricardo, but the Cameroonian will return to Cruzeiro at the end of this season.
