Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has given an update on the fitness of Brazilian pair Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho, both of whom were sidelined for the 2-0 EFL Cup victory over Leeds at Anfield on Tuesday.

Coutinho underwent a scan on an ankle ligament problem, that forced him off 34 minutes into the 2-0 victory over Sunderland on Saturday and is expected to miss around six weeks of action. “What I can say is it is for sure too long because the best thing would be that he is not out, but that’s not really likely,” he said.

“We have to wait for a final scan and then we’ll know how long it will be and then we have to take it like it is.” With Firmino, details are slightly more sketchy, with the Brazilian also sitting out the Reds’ EFL Cup match.

“On Roberto we have to wait. I know yesterday it was still painful, so that’s something we have to wait for – how he feels today. It’s another day for us. I think it will be OK but I’m not sure at the moment.

“That’s, I think, all. Apart from how it always is in the period after an intense game, like it was against Sunderland – a few knocks here and there, so we have to wait,” he added.
