Biggest idol in the history of São Paulo, Rogério Ceni will return to Morumbi as the club’s new coach, with a fixed salary far inferior to what he used to receive during his time as goalkeeper and captain.
In the agreement signed with São Paulo president Leco on Wednesday, valid until December 2018, the new coach accepted to receive around €55,000 per month. During his last three years, Rogério Ceni made around €190,000 monthly, and he was the highest paid player in the squad. In addition to reducing his salaries by three and a half times, Ceni also accepted to receive less than his predecessor, Ricardo Gomes, who took home €70,000 a month. According to Brazilian journalist Jorge Nicola, the contract between Rogério Ceni and São Paulo provide some bonuses to the former goalkeeper, which depends on the percentage of points earned by the team. But his maximum salary will be €80,000. The Paulistão, Brasileirão and Copa do Brasil titles can also guarantee him a cash prize, as well as a place in the 2018 Copa Libertadores.
Several players from the current squad earn more wages than the new coach. Maicon, Wesley and Michel Bastos, for example, are in the group that receives €80,000 a month. However, just Maicon is expected to remain at Morumbi, because Wesley and Michel Bastos did not have a good relationship with Ceni, when he was a goalkeeper.
Rogério Ceni retired from football at the end of 2015, but those who followed the talks ensure that the former player impressed São Paulo president Leco with his knowledge and planning. Ceni recently enrolled in a coaching course of the English Football Association and made visits to several clubs, including Leicester City, Liverpool and Chelsea. He also did a one-week internship with Jorge Sampaoli, 2015 Copa América champion with Chile, and currently managing Sevilla in Spain.
