Cannes, former team of French legend Zinédine Zidane, chose not to spend US$ 50,000 when they were offered the chance to buy a 15-year-old Ronaldo.
Moreover, they also refused to pay another US$ 300,000 to have Djalminha and Marcelinho Carioca, at the start of their careers. French-Algerian agent Franck Henouda, who served to be an intermediary in these negotiations, was a friend of Brazilian legend Jairzinho, then coach of Ronaldo"s first club São Cristóvão. Henouda has lived in 23 countries, making powerful friends across the globe. During his time in Paris, for example, he became friends with players like Uruguayan Enzo Francescoli and the Frenchman Luis Fernandez. According to Henouda, Jairzinho handed him three tapes with footage of 18-year-old midfielders Djalminha and Marcelinho Carioca, and 15-year-old striker Ronaldo, who was already attracting attention.
Henouda said: “The value requested for the 15-year-old was US$ 50,000 for 50%. The club wanted to keep the half because he was a promising player. Luis [Fernandez] went to his president, but he refused the deal saying he did not have the money. The three players in question were Djalminha, Marcelinho Carioca, and the third, aged 15 or 16… Ronaldo. O Fenômeno!"
The most interesting thing is that, at the time, Cannes had a very promising name in their ranks – Zinédine Zidane, with whom Ronaldo formed a partnership at Real Madrid many years later.
