The first round of negotiations for the contract renewal of defender Rodrigo Caio ended in a negative way for São Paulo.
According to the information from Globo Esporte, São Paulo offered to extend Rodrigo Caio’s contract and increase his wages last Tuesday, but the player’s entourage refused to agree. The club offered to double the player’s salary and a new bond until June 2019, which would increase his release clause. The Morumbi club recognised that the defender needs to be valued, and even more so after the successful campaign in Rio Olympics and frequent call ups to the national team. However, Rodrigo Caio, represented in the conversation by his father, did not accept the offer made by São Paulo’s executive director Marco Aurélio Cunha.
Rodrigo Caio is unhappy with the salary he currently receives, which is well below the wages of defender Maicon and attacker Wellington Nem. The salary-cap of the club was increased to €110,000 but even with the proposal to double the earnings, Rodrigo would not get close to the players who earn more, and hence refused the renewal offer. The current bond of the 23-year-old defender ends in October 2018. In the conversation, São Paulo proposed to increase the release clause and to extend the bond for eight more months, from October 2018 to June 2019. In the opinion of the leaders, Rodrigo Caio is one of the pillars of the team that will be set for 2017. Rodrigo Caio, one of the most experienced in the squad, pleases not just for the football that he shows on the pitch, but also for the personality outside the field.
In his last press conference, the player remarked that the lack of commitment shown by some players is one of the reasons that explains the poor performance of the team in the Brazilian Championship this year. The outburst of Rodrigo was well received by the board, but bothered some players, who judged the act unnecessary. Rodrigo Caio does not hide from the board the desire to be sold to a European club. Rodrigo Caio has been in the professional squad of São Paulo since 2011 and is the second player in the current group with more matches for the club: 198, against 201 of Diego Lugano. In 2014, he was close to being sold to AS Monaco, but suffered a left knee injury and the deal did not go forward. In 2015, the signing of Rodrigo Caio was officially announced by Valencia, but he failed to pass the medical tests. He was then taken for a medical at Atlético Madrid, but a transfer collapsed after problems with the agents at that time and the girlfriend of former president Carlos Miguel Aidar, Cinira Maturana. This year, Hamburg had made a proposal of €12.5 million to sign Rodrigo – the club accepted the offer, but the defender refused. Sevilla and Napoli also expressed an interest.
